BKK

Got into Bangkok last night... I have been treated like a king ever since.. starting with being picked up from the airport by a friend, and then being chauffered all around town today.. The temples were just amazing...

I know I've been a complete slackarse, not updating this site.. but I promise I will catch up on the blogging thing... Lots to write about... lots...

JUST SOME STRING OF INCOMPLETES
John Mayer, Hordern Pavillion - Sat, 27th Sept 2003

Heavier things - I guess if you're a JM fan, you either really like the new direction he is taking, or you are put off by it... Before seeing him perform live, I was still undecided...

His breakout album, 'Room For Squares', is universally regarded as one of the best pop records to appear in the last decade.. It was always going to be tough to follow it up... In 'Heavier Things', he has gone back to his roots somewhat, with a sound that's dinstinctly more robust.. This, together with the bluesy influence, clearly show a concerted effort to shy away from the more melodic-poppy sounds of the first album...

Lo-Tel were the support act, and they were distinctly better than the support band I saw the last time I was at the Hordern - The Hard-Ons... They did their Teenager of the Year and a couple of Matchbox 20 impersonation attempts, but as I didn't know much of their stuff.. it was all a bit of a yawn really...

John started his set with the first 2 songs off the new album... Clarity was much better live, and my new found love for Bigger Than My Body is a result of seeing him play it acoustically on The Panel on Wednesday night... He followed it up with a somewhat disappointing version of one of my favourite JM songs, My Stupid Mouth...

As he continued through the set, I could not help notice the whole performance was lacking that special something you'd come to expect from JM... It wasn't until a 15-minute Come Back To Bed jam session that really got the blood going.. It included a hilarious conversation with his guitar!

My other highlights of the evening were a rocking Why Georgia, and a sweet Daughters...

Not sure if the $80 price-tag was warranted for the show (plus I did have to miss a mate's bachelor's party).. but it was overall thoroughly entertaining... I agree with most people that the Hordern isn't the best place to see such a show...
